PRAISE FOR JOHN WESLEY POWELL

“Few…have left behind them such a deep and lasting impression…” — National Geographic

“Wise and inexorable…” — New York Times

“Original, ingenious and forceful…a courageous and successful explorer…” — Science

Among the long list of nearly forgotten Americans who accomplished great things is John Wesley Powell—son of a preacher, veteran of the Civil War (he lost an arm), and one of the most distinguished explorers in the world at the time. Most famously, Powell led an expedition to the Grand Canyon and returned with a fabulously illustrated report for the Smithsonian Institution and the United States Congress.

In Tempest Wild is a unique collection of John Wesley Powell’s lesser-known forays into poetry—drawn from the archives, five poems about the natural world and humanity now combined with the Grand Canyon illustrations and a new comprehensive glossary for the modern reader. Powell’s poetry is a glimpse into the mind of a scientist wrestling with Fate, God, and Purpose in an age of material progress.
