Science

“An unfailingly interesting and reflective mind.”

—JAMES R. NEWMAN, editor of The World of Mathematics

In the years before World War II, Cassius Jackson Keyser, one of America’s foremost mathematics in the early 20th century, published a booklet of brief sketches of famous philosophers who were also mathematicians. A contemporary of the illustrious David Eugene Smith, Keyser was known for particularly verbose mathematical lectures that have not stood the test of time. The philosophy booklet was unique for him: the summary of a lifetime of thinking and studying, written in beautiful and lively prose, the type of writing that leaves much on the cutting room floor and preserves only nuggets of wisdom.

The Science Venerable Press is reissuing this long forgotten work, with totally remastered portraits, new annotations, modernized formatting, and an introduction and conclusion repurposed from other Keyser essays. Perfect for advanced high school and introductory philosophy of science and mathematics courses, this new edition of Keyser’s selected works — the first in nearly a century — also includes a set of discussion questions by Kevin Kambo, professor of philosophy at the University of Dallas.
